Breaking News

Robert Kennedy Nephew Sought in 1975 Martha Moxley Killing

Aired January 19, 2000 - 8:28 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LEON HARRIS, CNN ANCHOR: We have a breaking update to a story we reported to you earlier this morning that a -- about a Connecticut authorities preparing to make a major announcement in a 24-year-old murder case involving, perhaps, a nephew of Ethel Kennedy.

We want to go now to CNN's Deborah Feyerick who's got the latest developments in this case for us -- Deborah.

DEBORAH FEYERICK, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, Leon, CNN has learned that Martin County sheriffs arrived at the home of Ethel Kennedy's nephew early this morning -- it's his Florida home -- but they did not find him there. They did have an arrest warrant. We are told by Michael Skakel's lawyer that he is en route to Connecticut and that he is expected to surrender, perhaps as early as sometime today. Now, this comes in the wake of findings of the grand jury, and we're expected to get that within about an hour.

The lawyer for Michael Skakel said that his client will plead not guilty, and this is in response to the murder, 24 years ago, of 15- year-old Martha Moxley. She was found beaten to death with a golf club. Investigators say they found a set matching the clubs in the Skakels' home, but no one was ever charged in this because investigators say there was never enough physical evidence, but also there was not enough cooperation from the Skakels.

Well, this case was reopened several years ago because of new information coming into the police department. That is why the grand jury was convened, in order to investigate any of these leads that are coming out. We are expecting to get some of that information when the state's attorney briefs us within the hour.

Reporting live, Deborah Feyerick, CNN, Bridgeport, Connecticut.

HARRIS: All right, thanks Deborah.

Of course, we'll stay on top of that story.
