New York Police Seek Suspect in Wall Street Explosion

Aired February 11, 2000 - 8:02 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LEON HARRIS, CNN ANCHOR: On Wall Street, we understand that there is damage there from a bomb that was detonated sometime this morning in front of a building on Wall Street. There is disruption there and there is a suspect right now.

CNN's Deborah Feyerick is covering the story for us in New York's financial district. We go to her now live -- Deborah.

DEBORAH FEYERICK, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Looking out, that is the building in front of which the incendiary device was detonated. Police describe it as a homemade explosive.

On the scene, we can tell you, the bomb squad, the FBI as well as state police, this entire area of Wall Street completely cordoned off. And as people are making their way to work, they're all having to bypass this building.

Now, inside, the clients of the building, JP Morgan as well as a group called Dresner Kleinwort Benson. We don't know whether anyone was inside at the time of this explosion. Witnesses, though, just a few blocks away say they heard something so loud that the man thought his own building was going to collapse. That's how powerful the shock waves, and that's how powerful the noise of this explosion sounded.

Now police right now are looking for a suspect, a man who was wearing a tan jacket carrying what appeared to be some sort of a yellow toolbox. They don't know where he is. All they know is that after this explosion, he headed west away from this building. Right now, they are looking for him. Investigators have searched this entire area. As you can imagine, a lot of activity going on right now.

We'll have the very latest for you. Reporting live, Deborah Feyerick, CNN, New York.

CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: Thank you, Deborah.
