Russia Loses Contact With Mir

Aired December 26, 2000 - 5:30 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LINDA STOUFFER, CNN ANCHOR: We want to update you on a breaking story right now. We understand that Russian Mission Control has lost contact with the Mir space station. As we understand it, they sent up a radio signal about 7:00 a.m. Eastern time yesterday, got no response. They've been trying now for just about 24 hours, have not heard back from Mir. So they have no contact established with the space station.

The space station went up, as you might remember, in 1985. It was actually scheduled to be de-orbited just a -- later this spring, February or March, as we understand it.

We have been able to confirm there is no one on board the Mir space station. But, again, as we hear it now, the Russian Mission Control has lost contact with the station. It is a developing story. We will keep you updated. And we plan to take you live to Moscow for the latest in just about 10 minutes, so please stay with us for that.
