Wildfire Burning Out of Control Near Thousand Oaks, California

Aired December 26, 2000 - 9:15 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: Very dry conditions out in Southern California, and now a wildfire is burning out of control right now.

Let's check in with Flip to see what those winds are going to do today, Flip.

FLIP SPICELAND, CNN METEOROLOGIST: Boy, they are very, very blustery throughout all of Southern California, although there are pockets where it's actually very calm. But we do have wind advisories in effect in the L.A. basin, although in Los Angeles the winds are calm.

And because of those winds, a fire has become out of control near Thousand Oaks, California. We are told that it's been threatening many, many homes in the area, and you can see the fire blazing in the predawn hours here in Thousand Oaks, California. That's north of Los Angeles up -- I believe, Daryn, that's on the way to Ventura, isn't it on Highway 101? Isn't that near Ventura County?

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Right about the line? Yes, just to give people around the rest of the country what we're talking about.

The wind has been whipped up to near 40-mile-an-hour gusts, and in some cases sustained winds of between 25 and 30 miles an hour. We've been talking about this very blustery Santa Ana and easterly or northeasterly wind in the area for the last several weeks.

There you can see a pool in the center of your picture as the helicopter flies across it.

The Santa Ana winds come from the deserts. And the friction coming down the coastal mountains really heats things up. And while we've been kidding around about the very warm weather in Los Angeles while much of the rest of the nation is in the deep freeze, these winds that have been bringing in those warm temperatures also whipping about this fire, this brushfire in Thousand Oaks, California.

There is a wind advisory in the area, as we had said, but it's really a rather small area in that wind advisory. We really do not expect the wind to die down anytime at all today. For example, Los Angeles expected to go to 75 or 76 degrees. And, again, that is an indication of the Santa Ana winds.

So do we expect that this will continue to be a problem? Things will become a little more clear, obviously, once the sun comes up and you have a little more light in the area. But clearly the fire burning out of control near Thousand Oaks, California.

That's about all the information I have on this situation.
