Unemployment Rate Unchanged at 4 Percent in December

Aired January 5, 2001 - 8:33 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: We just got some information into the CNN Center. All morning long we've been waiting for these jobless figures and what the impact might be on the stock market. Well, we have surprise. The unemployment rate remained exactly the same at 4 percent. All this morning analysts have predicting that it would jump as high as 4.1 or 4.2 percent, a lot of speculation of what the impact will be on next Fed rate cut, if there is going to be one. And, of course, Wall Street doesn't like surprises.

So we are going to get a full report from CNNfn's Lisa Leiter, who is standing by at the Labor Department in just a second.
