Stand-Off at Milosevic's Villa Ends; Milosevic Arrested

Aired March 31, 2001 - 10:07 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

STEPHEN FRAZIER: We have been taking a look at pictures coming to us from Belgrade. We'd like to show you some of those now. These are scenes from Belgrade central prison where, we are led to believe, former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic has been brought after a tense stand-off at the villa where he has been living finally ended without any additional violence.

Mr. Milosevic now ready to stand on charges of embezzlement and abuse of power, civil charges, which are basically about his role in what the Yugoslav government calls "ruining the country." But he will not stand charges, at least while he's here at least, on war crimes, for which he's been indicted by the International War Crimes Tribunal.

But this -- we may be seeing now the end of an activist role for Mr. Milosevic that began in 1991 and continued for him even after he was deposed by a popular election that selected current president, Vojislav Kostunica, and who is presiding over these events from Belgrade now.

More details on this story as we get them.
