JOIE CHEN, CNN ANCHOR: Now it's time to go out west to get the latest showbiz report. For that here is CNN's Paul Vercammen, is Los Angeles to day. Hey, Paul.

PAUL VERCAMMEN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, Joie, updating a late- breaking story out of Hollywood, CNN has confirmed that troubled actor Robert Downey Jr. checked himself into a rehabilitation center in the Los Angeles area. Now this comes after an arrest earlier today by police in Culver City, California, who allegedly picked up Downey on a charge of being under the influence of a controlled substance. We understand he was walking down the street.

Downey's publicist told me a short time ago the actor checked himself in voluntarily for treatment of his ongoing drug problem. Downey, as you may recall, has been fighting charges in Indio, California, where he was arrested in a hotel room on Thanksgiving weekend. Authorities allegedly found cocaine and Valium after they got a tip that someone in the room had drugs and weapons. His attorneys are trying to have the evidence thrown out, saying that police did not have a proper search warrant when they entered Downey's hotel room.

In other news, the late Eva Cassidy once recorded a song that -- "Time is a Healer." Time may not have healed her family's grief over her tragic passing, but it has brought this: Unexpected success for her music on an international scale.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

VERCAMMEN (voice-over): Eva Cassidy has sold more than a million records worldwide, and recently reached number one in England, and yet she never placated a record company executive or played a promotional event.

This is rare footage of the uncompromising musician's musician. Eva Cassidy died in 1996 of skin cancer at the age of 33. Cassidy loved flowers, trees, all musical genres. She embraced the blues -- and even '80s pop.

BARBARA CASSIDY, MOTHER: She said to me, "Mom, I'm so fortunate. I've always been allowed to create." This was something that she needed to do.

VERCAMMEN: Newfound fans feel compelled to write to her parents. HUGH CASSIDY, FATHER: They're always extolling the idea that Eva's voice just really got them over the hump of some tough times, and for that they're very grateful.

VERCAMMEN: Cassidy grew up with three siblings in Maryland and painted with both tender brush strokes in works like this, and with that expressive voice.

EVA CASSIDY (singing): And the song birds keep singing like they know the score, and I...

VERCAMMEN: Mick Fleetwood played with Cassidy at his defunct Washington, D.C., nightclub and is delighted she's selling records now.

MICK FLEETWOOD, SINGER: I think it will show the way and give a lot of solace to some people that maybe are struggling, that, if you stick to your guns and you believe in your talent you can make it.

VERCAMMEN: Tiny Blix Street Records, run from this house, preserve Cassidy's song after the owner got a tip from another artist.

BILL STRAW, OWNER, BLIX STREET RECORDS: She had said that we are about to lose this wonderful nightingale and you have to hear her. So she sent me a tape of her "Live at Blues Alley" album cued up to "Fields of Gold."

EVA CASSIDY (singing): We'll walk in fields of gold.

VERCAMMEN: The cover of Sting's song is her mother's favorite.

BARBARA CASSIDY: I can just picture her there in a field with flowers, or in a meadow somewhere.

VERCAMMEN: Or perhaps from somewhere over the rainbow. Eva Cassidy's voice, an eternal valentine.
