Senior Sex in Sun City West

NATALIE ALLEN, CNN ANCHOR: Ever wonder why they call those retirements years "golden"? The term predates Sun City West, a retirement community in Arizona, but certainly applies.

Kerry Edwards (ph) of CNN affiliate KSAZ tells us all about life and love and reckless abandon in the over-60 set.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

KERRY EDWARDS, KSAZ REPORTER (voice-over): A saucy real-life saga known as "Sex in Sun City West."

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Definitely, the scandalous Sun City West.

EDWARDS (on camera): Is it is a scandal?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Oh, it's a scandal.

(LAUGHTER)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: There is probably a lot going on in Sun City West.

LORRAINE HAUL (ph), SUN CITY WEST RECREATION GOVERNING BOARD: This a very active community, in many ways.

EDWARDS (voice-over): Active in many ways is right, according to a recent article in Sun City West newspaper "The Daily News-Sun," an article that says there is now a growing problem in this aged- restricted community with people having sex in public places.

HAUL: Activities in our swimming pools, in our spas, in cars, in our parking lots.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I read that it's residents. It's hard to believe because residents live here and they have their own homes.

EDWARDS (on camera): Yes, go together, go home or get a motel.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Right.

(LAUGHTER)

HAUL: I guess, a couple of times, you know, you say: Well, it's just an isolated happening. But now we see it is happening more and more.

And it's a very social community.

EDWARDS (voice-over): Lorraine Haul (ph) is the spokesperson for Sun City West powerful Recreation Governing Board.

HAUL: When you get to a certain age, I think the assumption, especially by younger people, is that older people don't have sex. Well, guess what? We do. And I think it's wonderful

EDWARDS (on camera): And from this report, from this story, it looks like some people are getting a lot of it.

HAUL: And some are getting a lot of it -- and perhaps some unusual activity.

EDWARDS (voice-over): Unusual indeed. In addition to pools, spas and parking lots, sexy senior couples have allegedly been spotted in Sun City West dog run, which today had members of the Canine Club howling.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Sex is a little thing that bothers me. That should be in one's private home.

EDWARDS (on camera): Not here on the doggie run.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Oh, absolutely not.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: If somebody goes to the bathroom in public, you get arrested.

EDWARDS: Right.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: If somebody drinks beer -- I come from New York -- somebody drinks beer out at the beach, you get arrested. I think they should be cited.

EDWARDS (voice-over): And that is exactly what Sun City West officials are now encouraging sheriff's deputies to do when they spot people engaged in sex in public places: Cite them, and if they are found to be offenders, perhaps even publish them in the newspaper.

(on camera): You and your husband ever sneak in the backseat of the car or anything like that, ma'am?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: No, not any more.

EDWARDS: Not any more. You used to.

(LAUGHTER)

HAUL: The joke is that sex in Sun City West is not a sin; it's a miracle. However, we still have to maintain a certain level of decorum. I think studies have shown that people that engage in healthy sexual activities live longer. It's part of their overall physical health. But, again, there is an appropriate place to do things. And our parking lots and swimming pools are not the appropriate place.

EDWARDS: And that, my friends, is the bottom line.

HAUL: And that's the bottom line.
