STEPHEN FRAZIER, CNN ANCHOR: One of longest-running and most stored careers in Hollywood has come to an end tonight. Two-time Academy Award-winning actor Anthony Quinn died this morning at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, where he was being treated for pneumonia and respiratory failure. Anthony Quinn was 86. He appeared in scores of films, including "Requiem for a Heavyweight," "Zorba the Greek," "Lawrence of Arabia."

A close friend of Mr. Quinn's was the mayor of Providence, Rhode Island, Vincent Cianci, who's on the phone with us now and can fill us in on what was happening.

Mr. Mayor thanks you for joining us.

MAYOR VINCENT CIANCI, PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND: Thank you very much, Stephen.

FRAZIER: When was it that Anthony Quinn moved to Rhode Island? I don't think most people knew that he was spending time there.

CIANCI: Well, he moved here about six to seven years ago. He loved the state and he loved the water and the ocean, and he found a lot of anonymity here. Even though people respected him, they kept their distance, and he was always celebrating life with us here in the city of Providence and the state of Rhode Island. He lent his name and his talent and his help to so many people.

And the one great thing about him was that no matter how big he was in the world of not only movie making and acting, but also in sculpting and in painting, he was so well-respected here, and he was such a big figure, bigger-than-life figure, but also had such a common touch. We're going to miss him and his wife, Kathy, and his children are obviously in grief and we salute them, and certainly give them our condolences.

But he was truly a man came from the studios system in Hollywood. He was also a student of Frank Lloyd Wright, and I don't think a lot of people know that. He was an architect, he was a painter and sculptor. He told me one time that his involvement with painting came because he had to wait such long periods of time in-between takes of the movies, and so he would paint. And so, he became a very accomplished painter and sculptor, and he truly was a big hero to all of us here, and I'm sure around the world. But he'll live on because all his great movies, "Viva Zapatas!" and "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Zorba the Greek" and all the things that he did will live on for all the people to see for generations to come. He was truly loved and a great, great actor and a great renaissance man.

FRAZIER: And you're speaking now as more than the mayor. You developed a personal friendship with Mr. Quinn.

CIANCI: Yes, I did. Over the years, we became very friendly and we became good buddies and pals. There was a lot of age difference between us, but I never felt that. He was a person who was a friend to young people, older people; it made no difference.

But you know, the greatest part about him, if I can sum up in one sentence of a few words, he was an icon, he was a world-known figure, but he never let get in the way of his common touch, and I think that's why people loved him and why people will remember him.

FRAZIER: Well, Mr. Mayor, thank you for those insight into the career and into the later years of Anthony Quinn. I'm sorry to be talking to you on this sad occasion. Mayor Vincent Cianci of Providence, Rhode Island on the occasion of the death of actor Anthony Quinn, dead today at age 86.
