LOU WATERS, CNN ANCHOR: We have a new development in the Chandra Levy story. CNN's Bob Franken is with us from Washington.

What's going on, Bob?

BOB FRANKEN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: We're quoting two sources with direct knowledge of the investigation into the disappearance of Chandra Levy, who tell CNN that earlier today the wife of Congressman Gary Condit, Carolyn Condit, was finally interviewed by detectives from the D.C. Police Department and an FBI agent. She was interviewed in the Northern Virginia office of the FBI, which is actually part of suburban Washington.

Now, there's been an effort for several days to try and arrange this interview. Carolyn Condit became somebody the FBI and detectives wanted to interview after they learned fairly deeply into the investigation that Mrs. Condit had been in town with her husband, Congressman Gary Condit, at the time that Chandra Levy disappeared.

Now, of course, Congressman Condit has been repeatedly linked romantically with the 24-year-old former Washington intern, who was not an intern for the Congressman, but instead was an intern for the Bureau of Prison. But she knew Congressman Condit. Condit's office, up until now, has denied that there was a romantic relationship.

One other thing about this. Yesterday in Modesto, Congressman Condit missed the July 4th parade, one that he normally attends. At the time, his chief of staff out there, Mike Lynch, gave a rather cryptic explanation, saying he had another commitment that could become public in just a couple of days. And now we're being told that he was talking about this, that at the time, the Congressman and his wife were on the way to the Washington, D.C. area awaiting the interview with the FBI.

The FBI and detectives wanted to know if there was anything that Mrs. Condit could tell them about that period of time when she was in Washington when Chandra Levy disappeared. The last time that Washington, D.C. police in fact were able to account for Chandra Levy was May 1st. We have no information on exactly what questions were asked or what questions were answered. We expect to hear later in the day or perhaps tomorrow from the Condit attorney, Abbe Lowell.

At any rate, the headline is, is that Carolyn Condit was interviewed today, this morning, in the Northern Virginia office of the FBI -- Lou.

WATERS: All right, Bob, and we'll wait to find out more about what that interview entailed. Bob Franken in Washington.
