JAMES TAYLOR, MUSICIAN: In 1972, James Taylor burst on the scene...

BILL TUSH, CNN CORRESPONDENT: No, in 1970.

TAYLOR: Oh, it was 1970. When the hell was that?

In 1970, James Taylor burst on the scene with "Sweet Baby James," which went triple...

TUSH: Very good.

(CROSSTALK)

TUSH: James Taylor, intro-ing himself, 33 million records later. And Grammy awards, triple platinum, platinum, gold is in there somewhere. And this year nominated -- or, no, inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

TAYLOR: All the accessories, all the accoutrements.

TUSH: Yes, I bow down to you. Anyway, you're out on tour.

TAYLOR: Yes, I am.

TUSH: Over 50 cities. You're right in the middle of the tour now.

TAYLOR: It's a great schedule. We're -- the audiences are showing up, the weather's cooperating. It's been great, so... TUSH: You know, yesterday I -- with all the press stuff, got a copy of your, I guess, "Greatest Hits, Volume 2," which has just come out. And I listened to it. It's a great CD. I had it in the car, and I'm cruising along, you know, it's great to hear that stuff.

TUSH: I'm not in a position where I could put all No. 1s on the -- because I've only had one No. 1 single. So -- and that was back in ought-three or whenever, you know, it was on wax cylinders. Anyway...

TUSH: Which one was that?

TAYLOR: It was "You've Got a Friend."

TUSH: "You've Got a Friend." That was the only -- I could have sworn you had more than that.

TAYLOR: That was the one, yes. And so it's a different kind of process. Some of it is how -- what got -- you know, what was released as a single, and some of it is songs that have been very requested, and that people seem to like a lot. And then there are a few that are on there because I think they were really -- you know, that I'm proud of.

TUSH: We should mention too that you're not resting on your laurels here, that you're working on a new album now.

TAYLOR: That's right, we're slowly approaching release probably next spring of a new studio album.

TUSH: James Taylor, good to see you.

TAYLOR: Bill, it's wonderful to see you.

TUSH: Oh, thanks for your time.

TAYLOR: Thank you.

TUSH: And I'll be listening to that CD. TAYLOR: OK.

TUSH: OK.
