BRIAN NELSON, CNN ANCHOR: Buckets of babies have been rescued -- baby turtles, that is; dozens of them. The newly hatched turtles were discovered stuck in a storm drain near Satellite Beach, Florida. But now they've been rescued, as we say, and they're all just fine.

Now to some other little guys who love the water. These are the human species. They are getting an early start at working to save lives.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I'm a junior guard.

ERIN JOYCE, CHICAGO PARK DISTRICT: We have the junior lifeguards from all over the city of Chicago competing in events such as the run, the Runsome (ph) run. Beach flags, paddleboard. They're competing against each other. They're from different beaches and pools throughout the city of Chicago, competing in competitions to show off their lifeguard skills.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Ready, begin!

UNIDENTIFIED CHILDREN: One, two, three, four, five...

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Only the strong survive.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: The first event for double-Cs is the distance swim.

JOYCE: A lot of kids are never exposed to different events like this. And throughout junior lifeguard program, we promote citizenship, athleticism. They gain friendships that last for a lifetime.

(CROSSTALK)

UNIDENTIFIED CHILD: It's fun. It's more fun than competition.

UNIDENTIFIED CHILD: (UNINTELLIGIBLE) I come and pick up -- pick out a boy, and then one day when they shoot the gun, he ran like this, and he dove into the water with it.

UNIDENTIFIED CHILD: Paddleboards are awesome, although they contain a bit of weight, they're still pretty fun to use. JOYCE: The No. 1 priority for us is safety. The kids learn that they have to be safe in order to be in the program.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: It's a really good experience, especially if you're going to become a lifeguard.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

NELSON: And those lifeguards coming to a beach near you someday.
