SHIHAB RATTANSI, CNN ANCHOR: Well, the coconut is the most widely utilized fruit in the Bahamas; the tasty delicacy is a common ingredient in foods, beverages and ointments. Now it's the focus of a festival. Chris Saunders of the BCB gives us a sample of the flavors of this unique celebration. (BEGIN VIDEOTAPE) CHRIS SAUNDERS, BCB CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): That's what he did. He just kept on barking the coconuts, he was one of the entries in the contest. Actually Jerry Robinson did it the fastest to win. But before you can do anything, you have to get the coconuts. Four brave souls entered the tree-climbing contest. Some scurrying up the tree to the crown and sliding back down. Sometimes with disastrous effects. Alfred Watkins had no problem. He did it in the fastest time, too. With the coconut in hand, you have to cook it, and there's a variety of dishes the judges in the cooking contest sampled: one of the them was a coconut drink. (UNINTELLIGIBLE) The coconut fest, the first of its kind, was the brainchild of Dellarise McKinney. DELARISE MCKINNEY, NUTTY IDEA FESTIVAL ORGANIZER: I was looking up one day and there were so many coconut trees, and it flashed to me, we need to do something with the coconut trees, we have so many. We use coconut more than anybody else in the Bahamas, we have coconut with everything! I think that's a festival that is long overdue. SAUNDERS: These brothers both home from school in the U.S. got home just in time for the festival. MIKIOSH HIGGS, COLLEGE OF COCONUTS: I tried some of the coconuts, a lot of drinking, a lot of different mixes, and I'm about to eat a coconut fish when this is over. MARCUS HIGGS: It's an atmosphere you can't re-create anywhere, it's right on the beach, cool breezes, playing dominoes, the food and the people, it's great. SAUNDERS: What was great was this: she found this in her backyard. She is the winner of the largest coconut contest. (on camera): The coconut festival is just one of many in Bahamas that showcase just a slice of the island life. For the CNN WORLD REPORT for the BCB, I'm Chris Saunders.
