Feeling Fit: The Importance of a Gym That Meets Your Needs

ELIZABETH COHEN, CNN MEDICAL CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): When searching for the right gym, first decide what your fitness goals are and what features of a gym you'll use the most, such as cardiac equipment or fitness classes. According to personal trainer Tyronne Starwood, one of the most important factors in choosing a fitness club is the attitude of the staff.

TYRONNE STARWOOD, PERSONAL TRAINER: You want to go to a gym where you're going to get some good service, you're going to get someone there that is accommodating for you, you know, that you can get along with the staff.

COHEN: Another thing to consider is not only the amount of equipment a gym has, but the variety. Take a mental inventory and see if there are enough free weights, cardio machines and classes to keep you interested, challenged and motivated. Location is key when joining a gym. Depending upon personal preference, it should be either close to home or to work.

STARWOOD: Find a gym that's close to your job where you don't have to deal with the traffic until after you finish your workout, then that makes it so much easier.

COHEN: Other things to keep in mind are overall cleanliness, hours the gym is open and whether it offers extras like child care or a juice bar. When it's time to sign up, remember that the price and duration of a membership is negotiable. Be especially wary of long- term contracts that could rope you in.
