ASIEH NAMDAR, CNN ANCHOR: It may not be for everyone, but camel meat has been a traditional food in Oman for centuries, and it's being served in some unique ways.

Laksmi Kothmaneth of Oman Television has the sizzling details on the latest trend in camel cuisine.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

LAKSMI KOTHMANETH, OMAN TELEVISION REPORTER (voice-over): In the far southern parts of Oman, on auspicious occasions such as weddings, camel meat has to be on the menu. But the camel meat has also been expensive.

With the number of camels increasing and the cost of coming down, camel meat is almost frequently available in the souks -- the markets. At the meat souk we saw this dish, called magin (ph), moving very fast at cost a cost of 1 rial, right around $2.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: This is meat. (UNINTELLIGIBLE) home and is giving (UNINTELLIGIBLE) to market, at he's still here.

KOTHMANETH: Back Salalah Holiday Inn Hotel in the city, a chef has brought in a new angle to camel meat. What's sizzling on the grill? Camel burger.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We have a lot of camels here, and the locals, they like camel meat, which is traditionally part of the weddings they have here. Now, when you eat camel meat, it's a simple meal. I mean, you have taken a meat and cooked it and served it. So I thought of a camel burger because this is something that people have not heard of.

KOTHMANETH (on camera): Have you ever tried -- what are the meats you've tried for burgers?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Normally cow meat, but I have tried crocodile. I've had crocodile before, but never camel.

KOTHMANETH: So you have been adventurous.

What about you?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I've tried ostrich as well -- ostrich burgers, which are very nice. Quite lean meat, dark meat like beef, but never camel.

KOTHMANETH (voice-over): That was before the burgers. After the burgers:

(on camera): How would you describe it?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Very tender, soft to eat. You can't actually tell you're eating a piece of meat because it's so soft and tender.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: It's different to what I've tasted before, and it's not as fatty. There's a lot of meat burgers I've had before, especially on the beef side, you get awful lot of fat in it. This is not fatty, and it feels like it's really meaty, very tasty, and very easy to eat and very enjoyable.

KOTHMANETH: So camel burgers are here to stay, and that's what our guests confirmed, exactly what the chef said. And maybe now camel meat is not just meant for weddings alone, and could be a speciality of Salalah.
