DONNA KELLEY, CNN ANCHOR: It's amazing how much can happen in just one week. CNN's Thomas Nybo recaps what made news for the past seven days, where many new chapters were written on evolving stories.

THOMAS NYBO, CNN CORRESPONDENT: First up on the newsreel, fires raging across the west. In ten states, more than half a million acres scorched.
In a Hollywood apartment fire, tragedy. This woman handed her children to rescuers just moments before falling to her death.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: She heroically got her children out of the building, and sacrificed her life in order that her children could live.
NYBO: In the Chandra Levy case, her mother talked with Larry King about what it's like never knowing the truth, and fearing your daughter is dead.

NYBO: Meanwhile, aides for Congressman Gary Condit say he will soon break his public silence.
In Texas, this convicted murderer came within four hours of being executed before a stay was issued. Here's how his family reacted.

After 13 days aloft, Steve Fossett prematurely comes back to earth, ending his latest try to circle the globe alone in a balloon.
