ASIEH NAMDAR, CNN ANCHOR: We begin in Europe, where a refugee camp near the EuroTunnel is fueling tensions between Great Britain and France. The British government is urging France to shut its Sangatte channel tunnel refugee camp in Coquelles, outside Calais, only walking distance from the tunnel. The camp is being used as a base for nightly attempts by asylum seekers to make their way into Britain.

We get this British perspective from ITN's Tim Rogers in Calais, France.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

TIM ROGERS, ITN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): In the early light, they began gathering once again, heading for the railway on the target over the weekend, which drew them in hundreds.

This was a direct assault on tunnel security. Mass ranks of refugees deliberately taunting police and guards who are completely outnumbered and helpless to stop what was to follow. With the EuroStar train running past them, they threw themselves over the wire and ran toward their objective, massing for a charge on the tunnel itself.

Running on unchallenged, one turned to try to stop us filming. But with the guards outnumbered and left trailing behind, the refugees were determined not to be stopped.

This was one of the most serious challenges to the tunnel security. The refugees were determined to achieve their aim by sheer weight of numbers. And as these pictures clearly illustrate, they will not be stopped, whatever the cost.

Outside the camp from where they set out to reach England, refugees told me they will keep trying until they break through, no matter the cost or the risk.

(on camera): But it's very dangerous?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: No problem then. No problem.

ROGERS: You could get killed?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: My friend, his hand is broken. My friend has a foot broken. The tunnel has broken him, but no problem. UNIDENTIFIED MALE: No problem, by swim or tunnel. We have no road. Tunnel or swim.

ROGERS (voice-over): And as more arrive every day, local people say they are being overwhelmed.

CHRISTINE PRICE, SANGATTE RESIDENT: It's just increasing and increasing and increasing. What you saw on television the other evening is just the tip of the iceberg.

ROGERS: But these are driven people. They have traveled thousands of miles and they have no intention of being stopped now.

(on camera): They are leaving the camp again to make yet more attempts to get into Britain somehow.
