SHIHAB RATTANSI, CNN ANCHOR: A young player on the Grand Bahama basketball team has made a remarkable comeback after being seriously injured one year ago. ASIEH NAMDAR, CNN ANCHOR: Chris Saunders from the Broadcasting Corporation of the Bahamas tells us what grave him the strength to play again. (BEGIN VIDEOTAPE) CHRIS SAUNDERS, BROADCASTING CORPORATION OF THE BAHAMAS CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Franco Miller is one of the best players on the Grand Bahama team, even if one year ago he looked like this. Hard to think he could come back from a basketball injury that shattered two of his vertebrae. With tears building in his eyes, it was hard for him to think the day would come when he could get back on the court. FRANCO MILLER, ATHLETE: (UNINTELLIGIBLE), when I was sitting down and make a move, you know, it feels it's getting tighter and tighter. But they say after like a couple weeks I should be used to it. But getting used to this constant pain, it isn't easy. SAUNDERS: After crashing to the floor more than 12 months ago in a basketball game, injuring his back, he was fitted with a halo that seemed to be boring into his forehead, leaving two permanent scars. He had limited mobility, and his family had to care for him. Now, though, he glides across the court, applying defense some say better than before the accident. And when he crashes now, he doesn't even think about that day -- that day more than a year ago that changed his life. MILLER: I have confidence in the Lord to know if I go out and play (UNINTELLIGIBLE). So, when I go on the court, I just block that out (UNINTELLIGIBLE). My mother and all my (UNINTELLIGIBLE) at home, everyone, they didn't really wanted me to play, they wanted me to give it up, you know, but I told them, I love the sport, man, and hopefully when everything will works out, this should be the one to (UNINTELLIGIBLE). And also, I tell them I can't walk away from it, because I have got a lot of opportunities, a lot of things coming at me. So, and I am just pursuing a dream. I can't walk away from it. SAUNDERS: He has got a few offers to play ball in either Europe or South America, and he has to realize that dream for everyone who was there for him during those tumultuous months. MILLER: If it wasn't for the love and support I got at home, I don't think I could do it by myself. SAUNDERS (on camera): It was those people who stood by him more than a year ago when he was on the verge of becoming an invalid. Now, he needs those same people again as he tries to take his basketball game to the next level and attempts to become not only the best player in the Bahamas, but the best player in the world.
