America Under Attack: Five Firefighters Rescued From World Trade Center Rubble

AARON BROWN, CNN ANCHOR: CNN's Martin Savidge has continued to report on the rescue of five firefighters.

Marty Savidge, can you hear me?

MARTIN SAVIDGE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Yes, Aaron, I hear you.

And New York City police are now confirming to us that that is the case. Five firefighters have been pulled from the rubble alive. And reportedly, three, we are being told, were fit enough that they were able to walk on their own.

This is the story of their remarkable discovery. Apparently, there was a suspicious spot that the rescuers had been going over yesterday. They had marked it. Today, they had walked back in earnest -- and we must stress that today is an all-out effort to find survivors -- and when they were able to remove the debris, they uncovered what appeared to be the roof of a vehicle. It turns out it was the roof of a Chevy Suburban.

They dug down even further, and they managed to get open the doors. And you can imagine their amazement and pleasure when three of those firefighters were able to walk out on their own. So it has sent a jolt of electricity, getting those people once again reinvigorated -- not that they had lost any of their spirit. But obviously, when you find so many bodies -- to find five alive -- has sent a tremendous thrill over the fact that there are so many yet to be found -- Aaron.

BROWN: The men and women working down there need every little piece of good news they can to get them through what they are going through. All of us who know about Oklahoma City know how horrible the experience is for the rescue teams, and any good news is great news to them.
