America's New War: Fighting in Afghanistan

CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: CNN is also very close to the front lines of the fighting in Afghanistan right now.

CNN's Chris Burns, in fact, is just a couple of miles away from those front lines.

Chris, what can you tell us about what's happening right now there on the ground?

Chris Burns? Do we have the phone connection?

CHRIS BURNS, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Carol, can you hear me now? Carol?

LIN: Yes, we can hear you now. Go ahead, Chris.

BURNS: OK, great.

The mortar machine gun artillery fire in the last few minutes -- also a Taliban jet came overhead and hit some kind of position not far from here. It's not clear what it hit. But after the night of bombardment in which the Northern Alliance claims to have seized three checkpoints in this area, the Taliban are fighting back fiercely...

LIN: All right. I think we've lost that telephone connection. You can imagine the very difficult circumstances there reporting from the front lines. We'll try to get more of that for you.

Both sides claiming that they have casualties. They have claimed casualties on the other side. In fact, the Taliban claiming that they have killed a couple hundred of the Northern Alliance fighters. But we will get more on that in just a moment.
