America's New War: Pakistan's President Discusses Situation

CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: Well, Pakistan's president says he feels there's little chance of the Taliban handing Osama bin Laden over to the United States.

In his first interview since the September 11 attacks, General Pervez Musharraf tells CNN he has had steady contact with the Taliban in Afghanistan. And he sat down with CNN's chief international correspondent, Christiane Amanpour.

PERVEZ MUSHARRAF, PRESIDENT OF PAKISTAN: We haven't been able to succeed in moderating their views on surrendering Osama bin Laden or even we would very much have liked that the eight foreigners against whom they are holding trials, maybe they need to be released.

We haven't succeeded as yet, but we have our doors open and some progress has been made. And we hope a little more progress could be made.

LIN: Mr. Musharraf says U.S. troops are not based in Pakistan at this moment. And he also says he will not commit Pakistani soldiers to any fight.
