America Recovers: Congress Responds

CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: In New York City yesterday, members of Congress took time away from their work on Capitol Hill on an antiterrorism bill, to tour that devastation where the World Trade Center once stood. More than 100 congressman traveled to those ruins and came away using words like "incomprehensible" and "eye-opening" to describe what they saw.

REP. DENNIS HASTERT (R), HOUSE SPEAKER: Out of this tragedy have come thousands and thousands of stories about the valiant efforts of firemen and just ordinary people. The Congress should do no less. We will work, we will come back to New York again to see this town full of people and to see this town rise back from the ashes that we saw today.
REP. RICHARD GEPHARDT (D), MINORITY LEADER: We are inspired by your heroism and your courage and your steadfastness in fighting this, and we gain courage and effort and a desire to work with you from what you have done. We are trying to be, as I told the president the other day, half as good as you have been.

LIN: Well, the new antiterrorism legislation that they are considering would broaden law enforcement's powers. House leaders say they hope their version of the bill will be passed by the end of the week.
