ANNOUNCER: John Fitzgerald from Xenia, Ohio asks, "How do I get information on becoming a federal air marshal?"

GAIL O'NEILL, CNN TRAVEL CORRESPONDENT: Thank you for your question, John.

The Federal Aviation Administration is actively recounting air marshals and has received thousands of applications from around the country. The service is a low profile operation that places armed, undercover agents on commercial jets to prevent hijackings and terrorist attacks.

While deployed, the agents have limited personal contact with family and little time off. The agency declines to reveal the number of openings for the positions, but job vacancy announcements are posted on the FAA's Web site at jobs.faa.gov. The site gives information about job requirements, qualifications, salary and directions on how to apply.
