MARTIN SAVIDGE, CNN ANCHOR: Getting back to the military action in Afghanistan, where the skies are reported to be relatively quiet today after days of heavy bombing raids. Youssef Al-Shouli of Al Jazeera television is live in Kandahar, and that is the stronghold of the Taliban -- Youssef.

YOUSSEF AL-SHOULI, AL JAZEERA REPORTER: Yes?

SAVIDGE: Tell us the latest in what you know.

AL-SHOULI: Well, actually we haven't seen quite as much, and only four explosions and we have witnessed Americans fly -- planes flying over the city for a short while. That was a quiet night, actually, in Kandahar -- yes.

SAVIDGE: Have you heard of any activity on the part of American ground forces in Afghanistan today?

AL-SHOULI: Today no, we haven't heard anything. People are preparing themselves for the worst, and actually the military movement here in the city, you can't witness it. It is only people moving in the street. They are (UNINTELLIGIBLE) they are tense, waiting (UNINTELLIGIBLE). But we haven't heard of any military actions today or yesterday (UNINTELLIGIBLE)

SAVIDGE: Do you have any idea how many people remain in Kandahar, and what the living conditions are like for those who stay?

AL-SHOULI: Well, actually their living conditions terrible, terrible, terrible. No water, no electricity. We are short in food, also. I can estimate the people here are around 250,000 people. Most (UNINTELLIGIBLE). The city, I think about 1 million, 2 million living in Kandahar, now only 250,000 or 300,000 are still living in the city.

SAVIDGE: Youssef Al-Shouli, who is a correspondent with Al Jazeera television. Thank you very much for joining us.
