ANNOUNCER: Lisa Menard from Pierrefonds, Canada, asks, "What are the views of the Northern Alliance of Afghanistan on the West and on women?"

HARON AMIN, SPOKESMAN, NORTHERN ALLIANCE: Now that the counterterrorism campaign is under way and the resolve is there, hopefully, we believe that it could manifest itself in addressing the needs of Afghanistan in the long term. What the United Front really wishes in this context is that the Western assistance would enable us to bring about the broad-based government and pro-democratic government that would be suitably and appropriately address the rights of women in Afghanistan, which we have for years struggled for because we believe that without the adequate representation and participation of the Afghan women -- who have always throughout Afghanistan's history constituted a strong presence in the civic society of the Afghan people -- that reconstruction of Afghanistan would not be feasible given that they constitute more than 50 percent of the Afghan population.
