JUDY WOODRUFF, CNN ANCHOR: We want to bring you up to date just quickly on events in Israel, where correspondent Mike Hanna, I believe, is with us now.

Mike, are you there?

MIKE HANNA, CNN JERUSALEM BUREAU CHIEF: Yes I am, Judy.

WOODRUFF: I want to ask you about this bus explosion in northern Israel, where you had at least three deaths. What have you learned at this point?

HANNA: Well, what we have at this point, Judy, is that there was a massive explosion, according to eyewitnesses, aboard a bus traveling in the north of Israel. It's a normal bus link -- civilian bus link between Nazareth and Tel Aviv, bus number 823.

And according to police at this stage, three people were killed in the blast, six people were injured. One of the three dead -- this according to one police source, though not confirmed officially -- one of the three dead was a -- the person who was believed to have been carrying the explosives. In other words, a suicide bomber.

At this point, not confirmed at this particular stage. What police have confirmed is that three people were killed and six injured in an explosion aboard a bus traveling in northern Israel. This explosion coming as the U.S. continues its efforts to secure a peace in the region. U.S. Envoy Anthony Zinni continually holding meetings with Israeli and Palestinian leaders in a bid to bring about cease- fire. Not only bring about a cease-fire, but make sure that both sides observe it. This latest incident of violence yet another indication of exactly how difficult Mr. Zinni's tasks is -- Judy.

WOODRUFF: Difficult indeed. CNN's Mike Hanna joining us from Jerusalem. And this coming on top of two other separate reports in the West Bank today. Another one where an Israeli -- two Israelis shot and wounded. A separate incident where a Palestinian -- two Palestinians were shot and killed by Israeli soldiers at an Israeli checkpoint near Nablus.

The situation in that country far, far from settled.
