JUDY WOODRUFF, CNN ANCHOR: We're going to show now some live pictures from New York City. The Olympic Torch being carried through the Big Apple by the mayor of New York, Rudy Giuliani -- named just this weekend "TIME" magazine's Person of the Year. The torch is passing through New York, as it has through many other cities -- and 46 states in all on its way to Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. The games coming up in February.

In New York, the torch has been carried by many runners who've lost family members and dear friends in the September 11 terrorist attacks. It first came in across Staten Island, then into Brooklyn on Sunday morning as part -- as just one leg of this 46-state, 13,000- mile journey across the country, which will end at -- in Salt Lake City before the February games begin.

The mayor picked up this torch in midtown New York at a pier, and he has carried it from there to Rockefeller Center. That's what you see right now. These are some former Olympians standing with the mayor.

And once the mayor -- once the mayor is finished this evening with this ceremony, he will -- the flame itself will be kept burning in a cauldron until the day after Christmas, when the torch relay will begin once again.

Once again, Rudy Giuliani in New York City with the Olympic Torch.
