CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Let's get the goods on the Grammys now. Did you stay up late and watch them? Well, the music industry's most prestigious awards ceremony was held last night in Los Angeles. In case you didn't know it, if you missed it, no worries.

Our Eric Horng joins us live from Los Angeles with all of the highlights. It was a pretty good show, Eric.

ERIC HORNG, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Yes, not bad at all, Carol. Good morning or good evening, depending on the way you look at it out here in L.A. a little after 2:30 a.m., and some of those post-Grammy parties still going late into the night.

And a lot of reason to celebrate for the folks behind the "O Brother Where Art Thou" soundtrack, taking home the big prize of the night, Best Album, really seizing that Grammy spotlight alongside Alicia Keys and U2.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

(voice-over): U2 opened the show with a stirring live performance, and later walked away with four Grammys, including Record of the Year for "Walk On."

BONO, SINGER (singing): I have no friends to help me now.

HORNG: But U2 was denied the coveted Album of the Year award. That honor going to the "O Brother Where Art Thou" soundtrack. The compilation of American blues music has sold four million copies, but was seen as a long shot for Best Album.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We are filled with gratitude, not only that you have chosen to honor this work in this way, but also that we were afforded the chance to make it in the first place.

HORNG: Song of the Year, which honors the writer, went to Alicia Keys. The 21-year-old took home four other awards, including Best New Artist and Best R&B Album.

ALICIA KEYS, GRAMMY WINNER: I would like to dedicate this to just thinking out of the box, just not being afraid to be who you are.

HORNG: Other winners included Nelly Fertado for Best Female Pop Vocal performance for "I'm Like a Bird," the women of "Lady Marmalade," Pink, Mya, Lil' Kim and Christina Aguilera, for Best Pop Collaboration, rap duo Outcast for Best Rap Album for "Stankonia" and Train for Best Rock Song for "Drops of Jupiter."

(END VIDEOTAPE)

(on camera): Noticeably absent from the winner's podium, India Arie, walking into the night with seven nominations, walking out empty handed.

In Los Angeles, I am Eric Horng reporting live -- Carol, back to you.

COSTELLO: She was robbed, Eric.

HORNG: I have a feeling she'll be back though.

COSTELLO: Yes. It gave her a lot of publicity too, because not many people had really heard of her before she was nominated for so many Grammys.

HORNG: Certainly kind of a mixed blessing for her. Even she was sort of surprised by how many nominations that she garnered, seven of them, and she really was not nominated or received any awards prior to the nominations process. So you know, bittersweet, but at the same time, pretty happy, because a lot of people will be going out to the record store to buy that record.

COSTELLO: OK, Eric, your favorite outfit of the night, I have to ask.

HORNG: You know, I really thought that Nelly Fertado looked absolutely stunning. You know, she had two outfits. She walked in at first with a white gown, and then for her performance, switched into a red number, and I thought she looked absolutely stunning.

COSTELLO: She is absolutely stunning.

HORNG: Yes.

COSTELLO: Thank you, Eric Horng -- we'll catch you in about an hour from now.

HORNG: OK.

COSTELLO: Thank you.
