CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Six months ago the nation was in shock, reeling from the terrorist attacks of September 11. Yesterday was a day of remembrance.

Our Aaron Brown reports on how the nation marked that unforgettable day.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE (singing): Oh say can you see, by the dawn's early light.

AARON BROWN, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): New York marked the moment the planes hit the towers in the only way that made sense, some words of hope and moments of silence that spoke even louder.

MAYOR MICHAEL BLOOMBERG (R), NEW YORK: We have to go on, and we will go on. We will make New York City a better city, we will make America a better country, and we will make the world a better place for everybody in the future.

BROWN: At the Pentagon, too, of course, silence and resolve.

And in a field in Pennsylvania where the fourth plane crashed because the passengers and crew decided that while they may die as victims, they would not die as helpless victims.

They were heroes on that day, a day we were all reminded what hero really means.

RUDY GIULIANI, FORMER MAYOR OF NEW YORK: They would want us to lift up our heads very, very high. They would want us to move forward as a people who live in freedom with strength and determination that ultimately, ultimately this country will prevail as it always has.

(SINGING)

BROWN: From the president whose term was redefined six months ago, a promise.

GEORGE W. BUSH, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES: September the 11th was not the beginning of global terror, but it was the beginning of the world's concerted response. History will know that day not only as a day of tragedy, but as a day of decision, when the civilized world was stirred to anger and to action. And the terrorists will remember September the 11th as the day their reckoning began.

BROWN: In New York, a new memorial today dragged from the rubble. And tonight, lights where the towers once stood to mark the place where our national lives changed.

JESSE NORMAN, OPERATIC SOPRANO (singing): God shed his grace on thee.
