PAULA ZAHN, CNN ANCHOR: The big question at this hour: Who were the best dressed stars at the Oscars last night. Oscar night is more about winning. It's also about making a statement. And last night, the movie world's biggest stars were doing just that. Let's watch.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR (voice-over): It's the first big awards that we have seen you not in black.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yes. I am bold.

HALLE BERRY, ACTRESS: The dress is by Eli Fab (ph) and jewels by Harry Winston (ph).

KAGAN: You look absolutely lovely.

BERRY: Thank you.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: It's a stunning outfit.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Thank you so much. It's Versace Couture. Wait, I want to do a spin.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I am wearing a Norman Royal (ph) dress from the '60s. It's Couture (ph). It was in some lady's closet for the last -- whatever -- 40 years.

JODIE FOSTER, ACTRESS: I don't know. I'm (UNINTELLIGIBLE) than I was at six months, as we all know, but Giorgio Armani and Anne Boulder (ph) as well.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: You'll find that a lot of (UNINTELLIGIBLE) people are wearing them this evening.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: My jewelry gets stuck on this dress and everything is getting -- and I'm constantly adjusting, making sure everything is covered.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Well, the great thing about these is they are part of a Red Carpet collection. And if you wore them $10,000 will go to AMFAR (ph), which is an amazing AIDS research organization. UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: They are the most expensive pair of shoes ever made.

KAGAN: And how about the necklace?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Oh, my god. Oh, my god, need I say more. No, this is twice the size of the Hope diamond.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: It's my little (UNINTELLIGIBLE).

KAGAN: Now, is this your own stuff?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Yes, yes.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: This is Carolyn Herrera (ph).

ZAHN: Wow! And joining us now from Los Angeles with more on the show before the show, Merle Ginsberg (ph), entertainment editor for "Women's Wear Daily." You've got quite a constitution to stay up all night and join us here this morning -- welcome, Merle. We look forward to hearing some of your opinions here.

Let's start off with Nicole Kidman. How did she look last night?

MERLE GINSBERG, ENTERTAINMENT EDITOR, "WOMEN'S WEAR DAILY": I thought she looked so dramatically pale, and she has worn black every single show up until now. And we saw her in "Moulin Rouge" with like the full red lips and the dark red hair. Her hair is very light now from movies, and she wore Chanel and wore this kind of blush pink, and it was so dramatic, because it was just so light.

ZAHN: She looked pretty, though, didn't she?

GINSBERG: Really pretty, and in fact, that's what we wrote in "Women's Wear Daily" today that, you know, looks come and go, but pretty always prevails.

ZAHN: And how about Jennifer Connelly, also someone we have gotten used to seeing dressed in black a lot at these award shows? Also in a pale palette here.

GINSBERG: She looked very interesting. Absolutely. She is such a New York girl. She is always wearing black, but she wore this kind of very kind of fawn color. She wore Balence Siaga (ph), a French house, and I think she's going to do for Balence Siaga what Uma Thurman for Prada a number of years ago and make it into, you know, a much bigger household name.

ZAHN: Reece Witherspoon took to the aisle in black last night. What was she wearing?

GINSBERG: Classic Valentino Couture, kind of '20s look, slightly wavy hair and had jet beads on it, and I thought she looked really grown up and pretty. ZAHN: Yes, I did too. I thought she looked great. Gwyneth Paltrow is someone who seems to be a little more controversial from the photo editor's point of view. Did she carry out this look?

GINSBERG: You know, I personally think so. It's Alexander McQueen (ph). It's extremely dramatic. She had kind of a gothy (ph) eye going, and I know a lot of people said, you know, what was going on with that top or whatever, but I think Gwyneth was sheik enough and thin enough to pull it off.

ZAHN: Yes, I am hearing more this morning, have you ever heard about wearing undergarments there, Gwyneth?

GINSBERG: Yes, it might have helped. I have to agree with that.

ZAHN: All right. Kate Winslet, beautiful in red last night. What did you think of this look?

GINSBERG: You know, she is a great actor. She has been to a lot of award shows. She never really gets her look right, sometimes it's overdone or underdone. I thought this was just perfect. You know, great dramatic color for her, beautiful flower, you know, piece over the side. It was done by a friend of hers named Bandelesi (ph), who is a British designer.

ZAHN: Halle -- excuse me -- Halle Berry, who of course, made history last night being the first African-American woman to take home the Best Actress award.

GINSBERG: She did not make fashion history, though, in my opinion, in that she wore the beautiful white dress to the Screen Actress Guild awards. She wore a brown Valentino to the Golden Globes. This was not my favorite look of hers in that I thought it was too sheer. I didn't like the bottom of it. And I just didn't think it was the most flattering for her.

ZAHN: Faith Hill, also showed up there last night.

GINSBERG: That I thought was just a huge mistake. And Versace had a couple of great looks last night, but this was not one, and then this kind of rainbow thing, just a little too garish for the Oscars.

ZAHN: Cameron Diaz also wore something that inspired a lot of talk last night.

GINSBERG: She wore a very interesting Emmanuel Angara Hoath (ph) Couture, very, very fashion and sheik. The messed up, just fell out of bed hair didn't really make the dress work. I thought it looked a little slightly too sloppy.

ZAHN: Well, before we let you go, we're going to show quick pictures of Samuel Jackson, Will Smith and Denzel Washington. How did the men look last night?

GINSBERG: I thought that these particular men looked really natty. I liked the longer jacket length. Sam Jackson is wearing like a black on black brocade Armani. Will Smith was wearing English designer, Oslo Botang (ph), and Denzel was doing classic Armani, deep navy blue that really looked sharp.

ZAHN: Well, you are a real champ to have to work all night and join us this morning. Merle Ginsberg, we look forward to seeing your column in "Women's Wear Daily." Again, thanks for your time this morning.

GINSBERG: Thanks, Paula.
