KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: To continue the follow the news out of the Middle East, we also continue to follow the fighting that continues between Israelis and Palestinians in a refugee camp in Jenin.

Our Ben Wedeman is just outside that camp and joins us now with the latest. I understand it's quelled a bit, Ben.

BEN WEDEMAN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Somewhat cooled a bit, Kyra.

We heard that basically by mid morning the fighting had died down. We're hearing from people coming out of the camp that basically the Palestinian fighters have run out of ammunition. That's one of the main reasons for that.

Another reason is that so many of them have either been killed or wounded. Nonetheless, for much of the day we've been seeing U.S.-made Apache attack helicopters hovering over the camps, occasionally flying -- rather firing missiles inside that densely populated refugee camp which is home or was home to about 15,000 people.

Now relief workers are telling us that the situation within the camp is a humanitarian catastrophe. Many people have lost their homes. Well over 100 people have been killed.

During this onslaught a representative from UNICEF was telling us that 800 people had essentially been expelled from the camp. Some of them driven into the middle of the city of Jenin. Other residents are telling of Israeli bulldozers going into the camp and essentially demolishing houses, trying to create corridors within the camp for Israeli tanks and armored personnel carriers -- Kyra.

PHILLIPS: All right. Our Ben Wedeman just outside the Jenin refugee camp there. Thank you very much.
