PAULA ZAHN, CNN ANCHOR: We have some breaking news now on the wounding of a soldier in Kandahar.

Let's get to Ryan Chilcote, who joins us on the telephone now with the very latest -- Ryan, good morning. What do we know?

RYAN CHILCOTE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, sad news for U.S. forces unraveling here in southeastern Afghanistan. One U.S. soldier has been shot. That occurred in downtown Kandahar just about four hours ago.

The details of that shooting are still very sketchy, but according to (AUDIO GAP) source, the U.S. soldier was shot in the face. His injury is not expected to be life threatening.

Now some CNN sources describe the incident as a hit and run attack in that downtown area of Kandahar. That soldier is currently being treated here at the Kandahar Air Base in southeastern Afghanistan -- back to you.

ZAHN: Ryan, just a quick status report on what Kandahar is like these days.

CHILCOTE: Well Kandahar, unfortunately, has had a series of accidents recently. You'll recall just the day before yesterday four U.S. soldiers passed away in an explosion, when some explosive material they were dealing with detonated unexpectedly. So it's been a very tough week here in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

ZAHN: All right. Ryan Chilcote joining us from Kandahar, Afghanistan on the phone. Appreciate that update. And as soon as we have more details on why that soldier was wounded downtown, we will bring the details to you.
