CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: We have a dog tale for you this morning, but don't worry, it has a happy ending. It began back on April 2 when the crew of the Indonesian tanker was rescued south of Hawaii in the South Pacific.

Reporter Marie Sawarus (ph) of CNN affiliate KGMB picks up the story for us in this interview with a Coast Guard official.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: And when the operator in the back told us that he said, hey, I think I see the dog, everybody was like, oh my gosh, I can't believe it.

MARIE SAWARUS (ph), KGMB-TV REPORTER (voice-over): This is video of Forgea, the 2-year-old dog that most everyone thought was lost at sea for good.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: And it pretty clearly saw the dog running across the bridge wing (ph) and he looked like he was moving pretty quick so you know to me it looked like he was in pretty good shape.

SAWARUS (ph): Forgea was the captain's dog aboard the abandoned ship Insiko. It was rediscovered by the U.S. Coast Guard. They were searching for the tanker to see if it was an environmental hazard to Johnston Island.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: And it was the boat we were looking for. It was pretty easy to determine it wasn't under way and it looked like it had been burned pretty badly, and then we saw the dog. We quickly had to kind of come up with a way of helping out.

SAWARUS (ph): Lt. Boyer (ph) said the crew had dropped their lunches of pizza onto the boat for the dog to eat. Thanks to a nearby Honolulu fishing vessel, the crew boarded the ship and rescued the dog.

RUSTY NALL, AMERICAN MARINE CORP: That the fishing community has put forth an extraordinary effort here. Every one of those fishermen out there on numerous boats, over a dozen boats, have been looking for the last two weeks.

SAWARUS (ph): According to the Humane Society, Forgea could be adopted by the captain's good friend in Honolulu or shipped back to the captain in Taiwan.

COSTELLO: There was a dog on board. It was a little tiny dog. We're going to have more on the dog rescue on "AMERICAN MORNING," and hopefully we'll get to see a picture of what the dog looked like.

Our thanks again to that reporter from our affiliate KGMB in Honolulu.
