CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Well, Chad, we have a little more on Lisa Lopez. Yes, TLC's Lisa Lopez, she's being remembered as a gifted and talented musical inspiration. Lopez was killed yesterday in a car crash in Honduras. She was on vacation there.

CNN's Kendis Gibson looks back on her sometimes stormy life.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

KENDIS GIBSON, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): For the pop star, it is rarely tranquil. But for Lisa Lopez, it was especially stormy. "Left eye," as she was known, often feuded with her fellow TLC members, but together they made beautiful music.

TLC: Yes, I like it when you (UNINTELLIGIBLE) on the TLC.

GIBSON: With Lopez rapping on hits like "Waterfalls," "No Scrubs" and "Ain't Too Proud To Beg," the band sold over 20 million albums in the U.S. alone, becoming the most popular female trio of all time.

GIBSON: Brisk album sales and Grammy awards did not prevent the group from filing for bankruptcy protection in 1995. TLC later went to court to get out of their management contract. Lopez blamed an alcohol problem for more turbulence in her personal life. In 1994, she burned down then boyfriend Andre Rison's mansion in Atlanta, after a fight with the football star. She was sentenced to several months in a halfway house. Lopez later reconciled with Rison, but marriage plans eventually faltered.

LOPEZ: And like his promise is true, won't (UNINTELLIGIBLE).

GIBSON: Lopez released a solo album internationally last year, but it failed to generate much attention in the U.S. And despite occasional friction, she and her TLC partners were working on another album at the time of her death, which was to be released later this summer.

At news of her death, band mates Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins and Rozanda "Chilli" Thomas issued a harmonious statement. "We had all grown up together and were as close as a family. Today we have truly lost our sister." (END VIDEOTAPE)
