CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: I'm sure many of you parents out there have helped out with Flat Stanley projects. Well, one Colorado second grader was pleasantly surprised when his Flat Stanley traveled all the way to the front lines of the war against terrorism.

Reporter Paul Johnson (ph) of CNN affiliate KUSA has our story.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

JONATHAN HUMBERT, STUDENT: Hello.

PAUL JOHNSON, KUSA-TV REPORTER (voice-over): Point a camera at an 8-year-old and you're bound to get a story, and Jonathan Humbert has a real story to tell you. Meet Flat Stanley, a happy little fellow with a beaming stick man grin.

HUMBERT: I got some crayons, I colored it. The shoes are brown.

JOHNSON: Great fashion sense.

HUMBERT: Really. The pants are green, and he has a white T- shirt. Flat Stanley's back.

JOHNSON: And a lot of stamps in his passport.

HUMBERT: I haven't figured out that yet.

JOHNSON: You see Flat Stanley was a project in Jonathan's social studies class.

HUMBERT: Hello.

JOHNSON: He would get folded up and mailed out with the hope that recipients would mail back a postcard.

HUMBERT: Hello.

JOHNSON: And send him on again. But Jonathan got much more than postcards...

HUMBERT: Here's the helicopter and he's on the helicopter.

JOHNSON: ... because Flat Stanley ended up with an Air Force Rescue Squadron in Kuwait. HUMBERT: He's holding Flat Stanley in a jeep.

JOHNSON: And those pilots and airmen were happy to see Flat Stanley.

HUMBERT: He's holding a machine gun.

JOHNSON: They took Flat Stanley to their bunks, to the mess hall and took him on a couple of wild plane rides.

HUMBERT: Flat Stanley flew over the skies of Afghanistan.

JOHNSON: The pictures prove America's servicemen can still be touched by an 8-year-old's curiosity and a few crayons, and they thanked Jonathan for Flat Stanley's visit. So Jonathan wanted to thank them.

HUMBERT: Thank you very much for fighting for my freedom and my family. That's pretty much it.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

COSTELLO: Oh well that was so cute. So Flat Stanley part of our war against terrorism.

Again, that was Paul Johnson of our affiliate KUSA.
