CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: OK, the story we've been telling you about for an hour now, how a young couple made sure their prom clothes stayed on. Reporter Tana Castro of CNN affiliate KCRA gives us the answer.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

RIKKI PORTER, DUCT TAPE PROM CONTESTANT: This is the shoes, just completely covered in duct tape. And that's the lace. And we just took pieces of duct tape and punched holes in it all the way around.

TANA CASTRO, REPORTER, KCRA: Rikki Porter is showing off her prom dress. A fashion she hopes will stick around for years.

R. PORTER: The skirt, it's like I'm tripping over it constantly. They kind of like stick to you.

CASTRO: You see, Ricky's (ph) dress is made of duct tape. Yes, the sticky stuff. Rikki and her boyfriend, Paul, are competing for scholarship money from, you guessed it, the Duct tape company, a national competition where the best taped together prom outfits win.

R. PORTER: We kind of went overboard with the flowers...

CASTRO: To win, accessories are key. Rikki has got a duct tape parasol, a corsage and a bouquet and a purse made of tape with an emergency kit.

R. PORTER: Our duct tape rolls, just in case something splits.

CASTRO: Paul's outfit includes a duct tape vest, a cane, top hat, and a cape made of tape. And the most uncomfortable part...

PAUL BENEVENT, DUCT TAPE PROM CONTESTANT: Tape exposed to skin, which is pretty harsh.

CASTRO: And Charlie (ph), the dog, didn't want to be left out.

(on camera): The warning labels on duct tape say, "Do not use on chimneys, mufflers or tailpipes." It says nothing about prom outfits.

(voice-over): And if Rikki finds herself in any kind of trouble...

CAROLYNN PORTER, RIKKI'S MOTHER: It's really hard to get off, so that's good.

CASTRO: Now these prom-goers hope to stick it to the competition.

In Citrus Heights, Tana Castro, KCRA 3 (ph) Reports.
