CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: And for those of you who don't know like the "Star Wars" jargon, our Alicia Davis (ph) has come to the rescue.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

ALICIA DAVIS, CNN CORRSPONDENT (voice-over): Don't know a Wookiee from an Ewok? Darth from Garth? Well fear not, young Jedi, and prepare to be brought up to light speed on what you need to know as the "Clones" attack.

First off, Luke Skywalker, hero of the first three movies, has not been born yet. And "Episode II: Attack of the Clones" is set 10 years after the one with this memorable character, but before Luke, Han Solo and Chewbacca hit the scene. However, the scenes are being linked for Luke's existence. His mother is a senator, played by Natalie Portman, and the former queen ups the romantic ante in "Episode II" with the future Mr. Vader, Anakin Skywalker.

Yes, this cute kid in the pod racer becomes this familiar face (UNINTELLIGIBLE). Episode five taught us who Darth is.

JAMES EARL JONES, ACTOR: I am your father.

MARK HAMILL, ACTOR: No.

DAVIS: That's how that works.

Rewinding to the present episode, which is really a past episode, but you're catching on, Anakin is now a budding Jedi superstar. Not just with the force, an inner spirit that draws from the energy of all living things, the Jedis protect the peace of the universe. But that peace is now being threatened by the political manipulations of Chancellor Palpatine, who moonlights as Darth Sidious. And as his stage name implies, the Chancellor is a very bad man, although nobody yet knows it.

The reign of Chancellor Palpatine will now mark the end of the harmonious republic and the creation of the imperial empire. The same empire that Luke and his buddies later fight to destroy.

Call it an eternal coming of age story, pitting good versus evil. That's also the thrust behind this latest installment of the "Star Wars" epic. UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Clear, your mind must be, if you are to discover the real (UNINTELLIGIBLE) behind this (UNINTELLIGIBLE).

DAVIS: Alicia Davis, CNN.
