CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Over in Washington, D.C., search crews, including anthropologists and archaeologists, are poring over the Chandra Levy crime scene. But while the evidence gathering continues, a possible suspect has turned up hundreds of miles away.

CNN's Bob Franken is covering this story.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

BOB FRANKEN, CNN NATIONAL CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): As the day went on, police expanded the investigation scene, marking off more area along Rock Creek in their search for clues. Recruits were brought in to move across the park once again, looking for more remains, more evidence. And FBI agents arrived, including lead agent, Brad Garrett.

FRANKEN (on camera): You can't talk?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: No comments.

FRANKEN: OK.

FRANKEN (voice-over): With officials harboring little doubt they were dealing with a homicide, prosecutors from the U.S. attorney's office got a first-hand look at the area, where Chandra Levy's remains were discovered.

And investigators had a particular interest in one man already in prison, 20-year-old Igmar Guandeque, serving a 10-year sentence for assaulting two women joggers in this very same area of Rock Creek Park at about the same time that Chandra Levy disappeared.

SGT. SCOTT FEAR, U.S. PARK POLICE: Back in May of last year, 2001, a subject grabbed a woman from behind, a female jogger, and produced a knife. The female struggled very quickly and was able to get away. Later in July, a very similar thing happened.

CHIEF CHARLES RAMSEY, D.C. METROPOLITAN POLICE: We spoke to him some time ago, and we planned to perhaps visit again and talk to him once more.

QUESTION: But not since yesterday.

RAMSEY: But not since yesterday.

FRANKEN: Investigators tell CNN they will want to speak to Guandeque again, since the remains of Chandra Levy were found so near the scene of his assaults.

As for Gary Condit, who admitted to having an affair with the former Washington intern, an associate said the California congressman was hoping the discovery of her remains would exonerate him.

(on camera): The pace is picking up. Investigators have made it clear the discovery of Chandra Levy's remains is not only a tragedy, but an opportunity to solve the mystery of how she died, and who is responsible.
