DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Let's take a long plane ride away from there to California, where actress Winona Ryder is appearing in a Beverly Hills courtroom at this hour -- or at least she was supposed to. A hearing will determine whether she will stand trial in a shoplifting case.

And cnn.com's Paul Clinton is live in Beverly Hills.

Paul, when we talked to you in the last hour, you said that her attorney was unsure whether Ms. Ryder was going to show up for today's hearing. Any indication if indeed she has arrived?

PAUL CLINTON, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, yes, she has arrived -- we have not been told exactly that she has arrived here at this location. I have not gotten that information. Yesterday at 3:00 her attorney said that she may or may not arrive. But the court on Friday said she had to arrive.

Now, I've not been told that she's actually here yet. It's still 15 minutes away from the time that she has to appear apparently. And the court session may not even start until 10:00.

But currently, she's out on $20,000 bail. She could conceivably face three years, eight months in state prison for these four federal charges. But she seems to be taking light of the whole situation.

WINONA RYDER, ACTRESS: Thank you. It is so great to be here hosting my all-time favorite show, "Saturday Night Live." I was so nervous to do the show, but I worked on a movie with Adam Sandler...

(END VIDEO CLIP)

CLINTON: OK. Then she also went back stage in a dressing room situation with Lorne Michaels, who was mocking the situation also.

Now, "W" magazine is a womens wear daily. It's now called "W." And she was on the cover of that recently with a "Free Winona" T- shirt, again sort of mocking the whole situation.

Now, her latest movie, coming up on June 28, is "Mr. Deeds," and that co-stars Adam Sandler. And she was recently on the MTV Movie Awards, which were taped on Saturday night, and again they made light of the situation. So we'll see if she does, in fact, appear. She was supposed to appear here, and her attorney says there is going to be many surprises today and he is going to have -- quote-unquote -- fun today with the proceedings. So we'll see what happens.

KAGAN: All right. And we understand you're headed into the courtroom. So, Paul Clinton, we will let you go into the courthouse in Beverly Hills. Thank you so much, Paul Clinton, reporting from southern California.

CLINTON: See you later.
