LEON HARRIS, CNN ANCHOR: Up first this hour on CNN, the wild, wild World Cup. The U.S. team is headed now for the quarter finals on Friday against Germany. This is the Americans' best showing in the soccer tourney since 1930, and it all came against a team that they weren't even supposed to beat: Mexico. Final score, just in case you didn't stay up late last night to check it out, two to zip.

Here now is CNN's Carol Costello with a wrap up.

CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR (voice-over): The United States in white meets longtime rival Mexico in green. You could say soccer's border war went east.

Fans who stayed up late in Los Angeles didn't have to wait long for something to cheer about.
