CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Many celebrities look absolutely wonderful, and it doesn't necessarily come naturally. Some pay a fortune to maintain their looks, but there are ways you can get that chic look on the cheap.

And joining me live from New York to talk about that is Karen Robinovitz, a writer who covers trends and pop culture. OK, so you are going to give us a few cheap tips. What's the most titillating one?

KAREN ROBINOVITZ, TREND FORECASTER: Well, celebrities spend $3,000, sometimes $10,000 a month for hair, skin, body, just to look beautiful. It's summer. Nobody wants all of that pressure. You can do it in a few easy steps, $50 a month, and I'll show you how.

COSTELLO: And it will have the same effects of Botox and Alpha Hydroxy and Retin-A and chemical peels.

ROBINOVITZ: Well, all of that. I mean, Kate Hudson, Reese Witherspoon, Rene Zellweger, all spend about $400 to buy their blondes, but Beth got the look for $7. She had sort of a mousy brown hair with a little bit of gray, and now look at her. She has this great, golden blonde, that sort of straightened Nicole Kidman.

COSTELLO: So what did she use?

ROBINOVITZ: She used a product called Garnia Nutrese (ph), and it smells great, and it's just really easy. It conditions the hair and it gets rid of all of the gray like that.

COSTELLO: OK.

ROBINOVITZ: But it's funny. You asked me about Botox. Celebrities will spend thousands every few months to get Botox, and they are having big Botox parties with their doctors, and they are also going to spas and getting hundreds of dollars worth of facials. Every time Gwyneth is in L.A., she hits the Face Place for a session with Tony in Beverly Hills. All you need to cleanse, two simple steps, a great cleanser. Lauren (ph) has something here that she is going to demonstrate. It basically cleanses the skin, it removes the makeup, and it conditions at the same time.

COSTELLO: Oh, but come on. She is like 24. ROBINOVITZ: She is 24, but you can never start too young. The thing is if you don't start now, your skin won't look great later. And she moisturizes...

COSTELLO: Oh, well, it's too late for me!

ROBINOVITZ: It's true. It's true. And she moisturizes with a great moisturizer that has SPF in it, because if you don't block from the sun, especially this summer, it doesn't matter how young are you, by the time you are 30, it will look weathered.

COSTELLO: Well, let me ask you this. You know, when you go into the drugstore, and they say they have like Alpha Hydroxy, and they have a percentage on there. Is that good enough to use? Or do you have to go to the dermatologist to get a really strong dosage?

ROBINOVITZ: Well, you don't have to go to a dermatologist. Sometimes a really strong dosage will burn the skin. It will take off so many layers.

COSTELLO: That's what we want.

ROBINOVITZ: You know, you just have to be careful with what you use and really do your research.

COSTELLO: OK. So read, read, read magazines. Toothbrushes, OK. How will those beautify me?

ROBINOVITZ: Well, this is the thing. It doesn't matter what you wear or anything else as long as you have a good smile. I mean, look at Courtney Cox and Juliana Margolis, it's all about great teeth. Celebrities are, you know, veneering and lacquering and whitening and thousands and thousands of dollars. Sometimes they get these trial smiles that you can just pop on...

COSTELLO: Yes.

ROBINOVITZ: ... for a great smile once you're going down the red carpet.

COSTELLO: Now how can -- so what's the answer for the common gal?

ROBINOVITZ: Well, the common gal does not have to spend $100 for an electric toothbrush. She can get a battery operated one. Look at this. Fixed and oscillated bristles, $6, all the benefits of an electric toothbrush.

COSTELLO: And how about those strips that you can buy that supposedly whiten your teeth at just like the drugstore? Do those work?

ROBINOVITZ: You know, I don't think that anything is a miracle. I think as long as you really take care of your teeth and you floss and you use a great toothbrush, two minutes at morning, two minutes at night, you'll have a white, white smile and get rid of all of the plaque.

COSTELLO: OK. Thank you for those tips. We appreciate it.

ROBINOVITZ: Thank you.
