CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Speaking of suds, the Brits are drowning their sorrows over a mug today. The English team lost to Brazil in the World Cup two to one.

CNN's Richard Quest is live again in London -- Richard, our condolences.

RICHARD QUEST, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Carol, we're both consoling each other. I've still got my balloon that I had several hours ago. But even this isn't managing to go cheer me up very much.

The truth is, Carol, it was an extraordinary day of soccer one way and another. It was quite remarkable. Not only did England fall against Brazil, the U.S. fell against Germany, two phenomenally strong teams who have been again and again in the finals.

Brazil, the most -- the team that has been in the champions and the champions most often. Germany, number two. So really, I suppose, Carol, as we are sitting here crying into our Coca-Colas in London, and I'm sure you into your coffee in Atlanta, at the end of the day, we did lose, but we lost to some very good competition.

COSTELLO: That's right. And I do have my coffee. I'm drowning myself in Dunkin' Donuts coffee this morning. You are right, though. We shouldn't feel bad about this because both teams did very well, considering. And maybe this will spark more enthusiasm for soccer here in the United States. But you guys don't have to worry about that because there's always been enthusiasm for soccer in England.

QUEST: Right. That's an interesting point. And clearly the United States does love a winner. And of course the more success that the Team USA have -- I mean, you know, you have seen it with women's soccer. I mean that is so much more successful because they did so very well in the World Cup championships.

Now, the overriding question is whether or not they can turn the tide. Everybody I spoke to here said in four years' time, Team USA will be stronger, better supported, better funded. And you know what it's like in the United States, Carol? At the end of the day, money talks. They will start to win and, eventually, I'm sure they will be a regular fixture in the semi-finals. Just don't hold your breath for it.

COSTELLO: Oh come on. It's only a matter of time, Richard. Thank you. Richard Quest reporting live from London. Thank you. Thank you -- oh, I hear chants of "USA.". We love our London friends.

QUEST: Indeed.

COSTELLO: See you later, Richard.
