KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: Bit of breaking news coming to us right now. Apparently an attack on a U.S. convoy in Kandahar. That's the word that we're getting. We are going to go to our Barbara Starr, Pentagon correspondent. She's live there at the Pentagon.

Barbara, what can you tell us?

BARBARA STARR, CNN PENTAGON CORRESPONDENT: Hello, Kyra. Well, yes, very early word coming in to the Pentagon here. A US military convoy returning from a hospital in Kandahar back to their base, did take small arms fire within the last several hours.

We are told that one US soldier suffered minor injuries, possibly a wound to his foot. The soldiers, the troops, we don't know how many were in the convoy, but they apparently were visiting the hospital in Kandahar, returning to their base. They had been visiting the four children that are in that hospital being treated for wounds they suffered in the last couple of days, possibly as a result of that US attack, that US bombing mission and shooting operation north of Kandahar.

Those children had been medivacked down to the hospital when that incident took place. We are told the soldiers, the U.S. troops were at the hospital, seeing what other assistance they could offer.

Returning, moving through Kandahar, when they did come under enemy fire. We are hoping to get more word in the hours ahead -- Kyra.

PHILLIPS: When do you, we will check in with you, Barbara. Thanks so much.
