MILES O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: Want to take you back to Palo Alto, California just south of San Francisco. The southbound lanes of the 101 remain closed, have been so for quite some time now, at least an hour. As you look at some of the live pictures coming in from our affiliate KTVU, you will see that -- first of all, what you can see there, of course, is just how officers have blocked off the area. To give you the story in case you missed us telling you a little bit about a few moments ago, there's a shot looking down at the California Highway Patrol.

A moment ago, we had a shot of the vehicle in question. But basically, it began this morning very early in Livermore, which is on the east side of the Bay. California Highway Patrol officer stopped at what he thought was a disabled vehicle. The motorist sped off at a high rate of speed, sometimes exceeding 100 miles an hour, crossing the Bay Bridge lickety-split. Ended up on the 101 South. By this time, the highway patrol had put out one of those tire puncturing devices that they used, disabled the vehicle by deflating the tires. The car has stopped on the 101 South. We are told there's a driver and a passenger in the vehicle, and we are told, perhaps most ominously, that the driver appears to be spreading gasoline.

Beyond that, we don't know much. Obviously this is an unfolding situation. As the details come in, we are going to share them with you, of course. We're watching it, though, Palo Alto, southbound, the 101, this morning. At the very least, if you're out there, you are obviously not going to want to go that route.
