CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: It has happened only once before, but not under such stressful circumstances. Last night's Major League Baseball All-Star Game ended with no winner. And fans fought back the old-fashioned way with boos and debris.

CNN's Josie Karp was at the game.

JOSIE KARP, CNN CORRESPONDENT (on camera): After an All-Star break that was filled with talk of revenue sharing and work stoppages, both owners and players hoped that at least for one evening, attention would return to baseball itself. The 73rd edition of the All-Star Game accomplished just that, but for all of the wrong reasons.

BUD SELIG, MLB COMMISSIONER: As much as I hated to do it, and with all of the reluctance in the world, given people here in the stadium and the people watching on television, I really, really had no choice at the end but to end the game at the end of the 11th inning.

TODD HELTON, COLORADO ROCKIES: Well, it was bizarre all right. I've never seen anything like it. But you know, they made the decision to -- I guess to protect the pitchers that were out there.

MIKE SWEENEY, KANSAS CITY ROYALS: And the last time I think I had a game like that was when it got too dark and the street lights weren't coming on. And you know, you just say, OK, guys, we'll see you tomorrow morning and we'll play you again.

PAUL KONERKO, CHICAGO WHITE SOX: It does stink. There is no doubt about that. You want to see a winner and a loser, you know, but you just can't risk it hurting guys. You just can't do it. I mean, you can't have a Freddy Garcia go back to Seattle with his arm being sore, because he threw five innings in the All-Star Game.

JOE TORRE, AMERICAN LEAGUE MANAGER: When you have players come to an All-Star Game, you want to get them in. And the downside is that you get them all in, and it's the 9th inning, and the 10th inning and the 11th inning, well, you can't have it both ways.

CURT SCHILLING, ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS: I thought we should have just -- each team picked a player at the end of the game and had a home run derby to see who wins. That would have been a lot more exciting than ending up in a tie. KARP: In an emotional moment before the start of the game, it was announced that the All-Star MVP award would be renamed in honor of Ted Williams. And just another example of how bizarre this night ended up being, that award was never even handed out.

In Milwaukee, I am Josie Karp.
