DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: We are going to go from the West Coast now to the East Coast. Hot story on the gossip mill there has been the Giuliani divorce. They have been talking about this for almost a couple years in New York City, front page news in the hometown for them.

"New York" magazine columnist Marc Malkin is just one of the many reporters who writes about the very private life of this public man, and he joins us now to talk more about the divorce, and what comes next for Rudy Giuliani and Donna Hanover, who is now officially his ex-wife -- good morning to you, thanks for joining us.

MARC MALKIN, "NEW YORK" MAGAZINE: Good morning.

KAGAN: Boy, they settled this thing just at the final second, this was just about to go to a very public trial.

MALKIN: If it had gotten really public, it was going to get really nasty. These two sides did not want to go public.

KAGAN: As if it wasn't nasty enough. So, who comes out the winner in this thing? She gets a few million dollars, right, in child support?

MALKIN: She gets -- she gets $6.8 million over 30 months.

KAGAN: Tax free, too.

MALKIN: Tax free. Who is the winner? No one wins. It's a divorce.

KAGAN: Yes.

MALKIN: But at the same time, she is getting almost $7 million.

KAGAN: But he is getting quite a bit of coin himself, post 9/11. He turned into quite the cash king with his speaking engagements.

MALKIN: That's right, $8 million, probably, in this year. You know, as mayor, he only made $200,000 a year.

KAGAN: Right. So now he gets to cash in. But interesting how this whole thing unfolded. In the final term, his second term, he was kind of looking like the bad guy because he goes out and has a very public affair. She got to look like the scorned wife. But then, you know, what a bummer if you are this potentially ex-wife, and suddenly you're soon to be ex-husband becomes the hero to the world, much beloved because of how he handled the crisis after post-9/11. I mean, good for him for stepping up that way, but if this is the man you are trying to fight in divorce court, that cannot be a good situation.

MALKIN: But you know what, she wasn't fighting him about 9/11. She was fighting him about a marriage that went, you know, south. So, she fought a good battle and she got $6.8 million. But, again, you know, it's not easy going against man who is an international hero.

KAGAN: So you've been following this. What is the perception of each of them now in New York City?

MALKIN: I think it is now, for both of them to just move on. Rudy is still a hero. Donna has a career in Hollywood. Now the question is, will Rudy marry his girlfriend, Judy Nathan.

KAGAN: And will he?

MALKIN: It's not a matter of if he will, it's a matter of when he will.

KAGAN: Really. It's just that much of a done deal?

MALKIN: Everyone thinks they are going to get married, and now the divorce is over, so it's time to move on.

KAGAN: All right. It goes from a divorce watch to a wedding watch, then. I guess we will be watching it. Have you back, if the wedding definitely does take place. Thanks for joining us.

MALKIN: Thanks a lot.

KAGAN: Good to have you with us.
