CATHERINE CALLAWAY, CNN ANCHOR: We will soon know what's tops in television. Emmy nominations will be announced this morning. One show you won't hear is "The Sopranos." It didn't qualify for consideration since no new episodes aired since last spring.

Our Sam Rubin reports that that leaves the field open to others.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: So we're probably done here, right?

SAM RUBIN, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): The absence of "The Sopranos" is music to the ears of some Emmy contenders. It could mean their chance to get into the picture.

TOM O'NEIL, EMMY ANALYST: The hot new rivals at the Emmys this year on the drama side will be shows like "Six Feet Under," "Alias," "Twenty-Four" and "The Shield." And among returning shows that did not get their due last year, watch out for "CSI."

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: What are you all looking at?

RUBIN: "The West Wing" is the incumbent and sure to be nominated again. "E.R." maybe less of a lock.

MING-NA WEN, "E.R.": I really hope the show gets nominated, you know, again, and it's because last year we did really some amazing episodes.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Uncle Bernie.

RUBIN: On the comedy side, newcomer "Bernie Mac" and "Gilmore Girls" try to unseat the veterans, "Sex and The City," "Frasier," "Everybody Loves Raymond" and "Will and Grace."

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: That's been one heck of a seesaw, hasn't it?

RUBIN: As for acting, the cast of "Friends" shakes things up by competing for the first time in the lead categories. The women vie with Sarah Jessica Parker, Patricia Heaton and Debra Messing. The men face an uphill battle.

O'NEIL: Kelsey Grammer and Ray Romano and Eric McCormack will always be in that race. But if Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer and Matthew Perry all think that there's room for them in best comedy actor, they're wrong.

RUBIN: On the drama side, "The West Wing's" Allison Janney moves into the lead actress competition. She could join "CSI's" Marg Helgenberger and newcomers Jennifer Gardner of "Alias" and Jill Hennessey of "Crossing Jordan."

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Don't even mention the word cremation.

O'NEIL: Among new drama actors, expect to see Michael Sweet Hall (ph) and Peter Krausa (ph) from "Six Feet Under." Kiefer Sutherland will probably be recognized for "Twenty-Four."

RUBIN: Defending champ James Gandolfini won't be around to repeat, but don't forget about "The Sopranos" entirely.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I have a feeling we'll be back next year.

RUBIN: Sam Rubin, CNN Entertainment News, Hollywood.

CALLAWAY: Will your favorite show pick up a nomination? Stay tuned. AMERICAN MORNING will carry the Emmy announcements live. That's at 8:30 Eastern time. At least that's when it's scheduled.
