CATHERINE CALLAWAY, CNN ANCHOR: Across the Atlantic, the British Open's underway. Tiger Woods teed off a little more than two hours ago. He's going for his third major championship of the season.

And CNN's Patrick Snell is at the -- at the open in Scotland and joining us now with the latest -- Patrick.

PATRICK SNELL, CNN SPORTS CORRESPONDENT: A very warm welcome to you. Good morning to you from Muirfield, Scotland.

The 131st British Open Golf Championships and all eyes, the thousands of spectators on this course, very much on the world No. 1, the American, Tiger Woods. And I can tell you he's not having it all his own way out there. He's been struggling a little bit on the greens. And he's currently out on hole 12 at the moment, and he's on level par.

Now that doesn't sound too bad, but there's been many other golfers who have been taking full advantage of the pretty pleasant conditions here in Scotland. As I say, Tiger Woods on level par; but he's got a bit of catching up to do because there are a couple of players at least four strokes ahead of him, including the Englishman Justin Rose and Japan's Maruyama. They were currently on four under par.

Now what else, what else of the American interest. Well the American Jeff Maggert is virtually through his round, and he was one under par. So a pretty solid start from Jeff Maggert. Other American interest concerning Brad Faxon on around hole 15. He's two under par. So there's a strong American contingent out there. David Duval, of course, the holder of this title, will very much figure on this first round.

But as I say, all eyes on Tiger Woods. And it could be going better for the American as he tries to win his third Grand Slam tournament of the calendar year. Of course he's trying to get on to that unprecedented Grand Slam of winning all four majors in the same season -- Catherine.

CALLAWAY: All right, thank you. That's CNN's Patrick Snell in Scotland.
