Sheriffs Address Press on Runnion Murder

KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: Now we're going to go to Orange County, California, where the sheriff is addressing reporters on the murder of 5-year-old Samantha Runnion.

SHERIFF MIKE CARONA, ORANGE COUNTY, CALIFORNIA: An update for you on the Samantha Runnion abduction and murder. I wanted to give you just a brief history so that you understand of how we got to where we are today. And also introduce one of my colleagues, who will make a presentation to you.
This case began, as you all know, on July the 15th at 6:30 with the kidnapping of Samantha Runnion. At that point and time, members of the Orange County Sheriff's Department were able to bring their patrol units and investigative units to bear very quickly cordoned off this area and begin an investigation for Samantha Runnion.
Unfortunately, we learned that there was a body that was found in Riverside County and that body turned out to be Samantha Runnion and this quickly went from a kidnapping to a murder. And it's important for you to hear how this information came to us, and I have with me today Sheriff-elect for Riverside County Bob Doyle who has been a -- not only a tremendous friend to me, but an ally in this.
I think the hallmark of this particular investigation has been the collaboration. Local law enforcement, clearly our partners with the FBI, but Sheriff Doyle, and the men and women of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department have allowed us to come in and have our investigators in place, conducting the homicide investigation on that scene. He has now for you the 911 tape, which is what brought this into field division for us -- Sheriff Doyle.
SHERIFF-ELECT BOB DOYLE, RIVERSIDE COUNTY, CALIFORNIA: Thank you Sheriff. Good morning. I'm Sheriff-elect Bob Doyle from Riverside County and first of all, on behalf of Riverside County, I want to give our condolences to Samantha's family and friends and pledge to them that we will continue to work with Sheriff Carona and his staff until this case is brought to conclusion.
My reason for being here today is to give you the initial 911 tape, let you listen to it. We will distribute the transcription of that tape with the caveat that it has been edited to protect the reporting party and that particular individual's personal information. So if we could listen to the tape now please.

DOYLE: That concludes the tape. We'll have transcriptions available after the press conference for the media. Thank you.
CARONA: Well that was the phone call that started the murder investigation. Sheriff Doyle was gracious enough to allow my request to have our investigators run this homicide investigation in his county, along with investigators from Riverside County Sheriff's Department.
We put out an immediate plea to you, the media, for help from the public. You have been our allies all the way along, and we thank you for that. The information that you were able to get out and the quickness with what you were able to get out that information has been very helpful to us.
The collaboration between local law enforcement, the state, and our counter parts with the FBI has been incredible. We have had over 2,000 leads that have come in from the public, a tremendous amount of information and then at the scene, because of the great investigative work by several law enforcement agencies, the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, the Orange County Sheriff's Department and the FBI, a great amount of forensic data was picked up.
I have made a promise to you, the media, to share with you everything that I possibly can about this case so that you could help us to find the individual who committed this crime and bring him to justice. And living up with that and trying to be consistent with that promise I have some more information to share with you.
However, I'm going to do something that I haven't done and that is I'm not going to be answering questions. I will ask you to bear with me because we have a lot that we have to do in the next few hours. I will commit to you to share with you everything I possibly can in as much detail as I possibly can at 6:00, which is our next press conference.
I want to thank you, the press, and I want to thank the public for all of your help. And what I'm about to share with you in no way concludes this investigation. We are still trying to make sure that we bring the man who committed this crime to justice, and we want the public to continue to call our hot lines with any and all information that would help us solve this crime.
At 9:55 this morning we have made an arrest in connection with this case. At 9:55 this morning members of the investigative team arrested Alejandro Avila, date of birth 3-13/75, a 27-year-old male, six foot tall, 200 pounds, brown hair, brown eyes.
Ladies and gentlemen, I will be with you at 6:00 to give you more information. Thank you very much for all your help.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Wow.
PHILLIPS: Well you can even hear the reporters responding there. Oh my God, yes, we're pretty shocked too. That's a very unusual type of news conference. First of all, playing those 911 tapes from this young man Justin, who found 5-year-old Samantha Runnion dead on the side of the road, started to build a lot of anxiety just listening to this tape. We were trying to figure out what the purpose was behind that. Why they were doing this? It obviously got all of us stirred up here, probably a lot of you too, having to listen to that 911 tape.
And then the sheriff basically stepping up to the podium and saying I'm going to give you a bit of information. I'm not going to take questions. I have a lot I have to do in a couple of hours. At 6:00 tonight, I'm going to go before you and give you more information. But the sheriff, as we sort of feeling bearing the lead there -- 9:55 this morning California time the sheriff made an arrest in connection with this case. Alejandro Avila, born in 1975, 75 -- or a 27-year-old male, rather, six foot, 200 pounds, brown hair, brown eyes, arresting this man in connection with the murder of little 5- year-old Samantha Runnion.
We're going to bring in our Rusty Dornin right now. She was there, listening to this. Rusty, it was such, I don't know, very unusual type of news conference.
RUSTY DORNIN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: I have never been to a news conference quite like this. What you said, Kyra, from the tape being played to bearing the lead, as we say, (UNINTELLIGIBLE) announcing an arrest at the end and then not taking any questions. But this is a man that the buzz has been about all night long.
Apparently Alejandro Avila, was the one who owned three cars, all green, which is the color of apparently the killer's car, the description of the killer's car. This man lives in an apartment complex with his mother in Lake Elsinore, which is very near by where Samantha Runnion's body was discovered.
Also this morning one of our CNN photographers did talk to -- Greg Canes (ph) did talk to the manager of the complex there and she said she had claimed that she had seen this man at the complex Tuesday night behaving very suspiciously around a light green Thunderbird and that he did match the description that was put out of the sketch. So he does match the description and the manager of the apartment complex said that this was the person who was behaving very strangely Tuesday night around a car that matched this, you know, the killer's car -- Kyra.
PHILLIPS: OK, we're looking at the picture right now, Rusty. We just got this photograph on -- this picture of Alejandro Avila. So this is the man -- so he stayed in the area. He was -- he's living in this complex where little Samantha Runnion was playing. Is that right?
DORNIN: No, he is at a complex about 75 miles from the area where she was playing. It's the area very near by where her body was discovered in Lake Elsinore. That's where he's living with his mother. Apparently his sister lives there. They served some search warrants to both of those apartments. They also impounded his cars and apparently another white car in addition to that, which I'm not sure who that car belongs to, looking for forensic evidence. But all along the sheriff has been saying that so much physical evidence was found at the sight, that apparently with the tips that came in, they were able to go to this man and serve the search warrant. They detained him for questioning and then just moments before this press conference began, they arrested him.
PHILLIPS: OK, so it was the apartment manager that noticed how strange Alejandro Avila was behaving and then he called in the tip.
DORNIN: And apparently -- I'm not sure if she called in the tip or not. Let me get that straight ...
PHILLIPS: OK. DORNIN: ... I'm not sure if she did. But she did speak to one of our photographers this morning and said she did notice very suspicious behavior Tuesday night around a light green car. Apparently, several people have spoken to her mother -- or excuse me -- to his mother, the suspect's mother, who claims that, you know, that he couldn't have had anything to do with this, and this may be somebody who had called it a tip of some kind of revenge against him. So she's denying he had anything to do with it. And of course, he does live with his mother in this complex apparently.
PHILLIPS: All right, Rusty, I understand we have a piece of that interview from the mother from last night. Let's take a listen.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Does you son know why they wanted to talk to him?
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Why do they want to talk to you?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: (UNINTELLIGIBLE)
ADELINA AVILA, MOTHER: Huh? Oh because took someone -- the one that he was riding with. They took him down to station and he was with him in the car, so they and then he's panicked and he has (SPEAKING IN SPANISH). Yes, he went to get a haircut and that's why they questioned him.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: So there's a friend of your son who they also stopped and are questioning? Who's that?
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Who was that? What's his name?
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: (UNINTELLIGIBLE). Is he also being detained right now?
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: No, I understand that he was released.

PHILLIPS: OK, That was (UNINTELLIGIBLE) the mother of Alejandro Avila, the man who police have arrested in connection with the disappearance and murder of 5-year-old Samantha Runnion. Rusty, I saw you speaking to one of the detectives back there. Did you learn anything new by chance?
DORNIN: Unfortunately, I think the sheriff has told everyone here to remain quite tight-lipped following his example and very unusual behavior in not answering any questions. They are very -- you know all along this case has been very emotional. It's been sort of mission on the part of the Orange County Sheriff's Department.
They were going to find this guy. I mean he really has come out with some very emotional statements and challenges even to the suspect, saying you know we're going to come get you and right now boy, he has told everyone here, I think, do not say a word. Because we were trying to get confirmation on this gentlemen that was arrested Alejandro Avila earlier and none of the sheriff's deputies would give us any kind of indication or confirmation should I say, and that the cars that, you know, that had been involved in that -- that he -- that had been impounded that belonged to this man, they would just not confirm anything other than the cars that had been impounded.
They would not say whose cars they were or what was found. But apparently there is a lot of forensic evidence. At this point they're also not confirming whether there's any DNA evidence, saying that there's just a lot of physical evidence found at the site and perhaps in these cars.
PHILLIPS: We have a pretty amazing comparison here. We have the actual photo of Alejandro Avila and also the sketch provided by Samantha Runnion's playmate. It is eerie just the connection here. I mean it's an amazing description from the little girl comparing to the actual picture, pretty much right on the nose, Rusty.
What -- so you -- they haven't said anything about the forensic evidence then. They're not releasing anything with regard to the DNA or anything they found on the cars or the crime scene yet.
DORNIN: No. As I said, they're being very -- they're very concerned. They want a tight case in this situation and they're really not revealing anything other than he keeps emphasizing the amount of physical evidence that was discovered, but as directly whether that did include DNA evidence he just refused to answer the question. So whether he'll be more forthcoming with that at the news conference, which will be at 9:00 tonight Eastern, 6:00 here Pacific, we'll hope to find out a lot more of the evidence involved in this case.
But, Kyra, the playing of the tape, which -- you know it was very unusual. It really didn't have to do per se with the arrest of this man, but obviously, very emotional of this young man who also had a 3- year-old daughter who came upon Samantha Runnion's body. I mean it was just -- it was very compelling, very you know emotional to hear the tape of that.
PHILLIPS: Yes, I think we all felt that way. Rusty Dornin, thank you so much for bringing us what you have. We'll continue to check in with you as things develop. We also want to bring in Louis Hennessy, former D.C. homicide detective. He's in our D.C. bureau.
Lewis, I guess you heard the tape. I understand you saw this news conference. We were all a bit blown away by this. First of all, why play the 911 tape?
W. LOUIS HENNESSY, FMR. HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION: I have no idea. I don't understand the rationale behind that at all other than maybe they wanted to alert everybody how upsetting it was for the people who are involved in it, and maybe that's why they're refusing to answer any follow-up questions. That's the only thing I could attribute it to. PHILLIPS: All right, so then the sheriff comes out, he's very direct. I'm not going to take questions. I'm going to give you this bit of information and then I'll see you in a few hours. He gives a name, Alejandro Avila. He gives his age. He gives the complete description of the man, says he's arrested in connection, yet he's still saying this is not the end all be all. We're taking tips. Our phone lines are still open. He seems pretty confident, though. What's your read?
HENNESSY: Well he certainly does, particularly given the fact that apparently he was only arrested five minutes before the press conference began, West Coast time. But it looks to me as though they've done a lot of work on the case. They've executed some search warrants. They've probably been interviewing him and some of his associates and have a pretty good feel on him at this time.
I think the police are doing a couple of good things very well, and that they're keeping a lot of information close to their vest. And hopefully the suspect is providing them with information that only the murderer would know, and if that in fact is happening or they're getting tips about information that only the murderer would know or someone the murderer talked to. That's the type of information that's going to set off alarms for the police.
PHILLIPS: So before they arrested Alejandro Avila, you're saying that more than likely they already spoke him, interviewed him, talked to him, had been to that apartment.
HENNESSY: I suspect that he knows he's been under suspicion for some period of time. He's had -- they've executed search warrants, as you reported, on a number of his vehicles. They've talked to his mother. He's probably been -- being questioned for a period of time, and was not under arrest and then it became a point and time during the interrogation and through some other collaborative evidence that they were able to actually charge him and place him under arrest.
PHILLIPS: Well if indeed this is the man, the sheriff came out and said this is someone that obviously wants to get caught. He left a lot of evidence. He left the body right on the side of the street in open daylight. And it sounds like he didn't worry about leaving the area very quickly. He's hanging out in the parking lot next to his car. Does it surprise you? This is obviously someone that really wanted to get caught if indeed this is the man?
HENNESSY: Well I don't think anybody really wants to get caught. He probably had some concerns about observation others may have made and maybe potential evidence being found in his car., and he was probably being somewhat protective of that.
PHILLIPS: I understand we have those 911 tape -- or 911 calls cued up again. We're going to take a listen, Louis, one more time to those.

PHILLIPS: Wow, just imagine what was going through Justin's (ph) mind. You have to commend him, though, for making that call and even though his cell phone was cutting out, he kept calling back and calling back. I mean what a true American right there, to say the least, Louis.
HENNESSY: Obviously. I mean obviously his lead proved big dividends in the case, and it's very upsetting for people who are not used to dealing with crime scenes, particularly violent crime scenes on a regular basis. It is very upsetting to stumble across something like that.
PHILLIPS: All right, Louis Hennessy, we're going to ask you to stand by, if you don't mind. We're going to bring our Rusty Dornin back in. She's live at the scene. I understand she has more information for us.
Rusty, are you able to -- what do you have for us? I know this is all kind of happening at the last minute. So if you've got some things, go for it.
DORNIN: At this point all I've gotten actually is a transcription of the tape that you guys have just been listening by the gentleman by the name of Justin who called in that 911 call when they discovered Samantha Runnion's body.
The only other thing I do know is that apparently we have talked to some folks in the Lake Elsinore area in some of the shops, the commercial areas that the FBI was looking for surveillance tapes in there that they did confirm that the FBI had been in there looking. Now whether they have come up with anything, we have absolutely no idea.
You know pinning this on this suspect, but we do know that the FBI has been looking as they do these days because often these things show up on the tapes, but so far nothing has come up. So they're just -- they're not-- we're trying to talk to anybody here we can about any further developments, but they've gotten the word from the sheriff and they're just not talking about any of this.
I do have a little bit more on the interview that CNN photographer Greg Canes (ph) did with the manager of that apartment complex. Apparently she did say that this gentlemen, Alejandro Avila was walking around and around and around the car, this light green Thunderbird and she said it was very suspicious and she -- and he kept looking at the wheels and that sort of thing. But she was not one of the ones who called in a tip apparently Kyra.
PHILLIPS: OK, she wasn't the one to call. Now let's get the time straight. The sheriff came forward saying at what time Eastern and what time Pacific will he speak again Rusty?
DORNIN: He will speak Pacific at 6:00 p.m. and Eastern at 9:00 p.m. and that's when hopefully he'll fill in a lot of the blanks obvious -- here in this case because the only thing he's truly confirmed is that they've arrested this man that you know everyone here has been buzzing about for the past 12 hours.
PHILLIPS: All right, so 6:00 Pacific, 9:00 p.m. Eastern. OK.
DORNIN: That's right.
PHILLIPS: And that's when we're going to hear from the sheriff again.
