County Fair Cows Get Out of Hand

ANDERSON COOPER, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, as we all know, watching dozens of cows walk through downtown streets can be very unsettling. I have no idea what that means. So you can imagine what happened when an organized cattle walk got out of hand. This should be a lesson to us all.

Jamie Wilson of our affiliate station KPTV reports from Hillsboro, Oregon.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

JAMIE WILSON, KPTV CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): More than 50 head of rodeo cattle turn onto Main Street in Hillsboro for what starts out as a calm promotional parade for the Washington County Fair. Not two blocks down the street, the herd breaks loose.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I've got 'em. Don't panic.

WILSON: The cows head straight for the grass in front of the courthouse, sending some people running. Others watch in disbelief with their cameras at the ready while the sheriff's mounted posse rounds them up.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Hey, cow. Hey, cattle.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: The cattle are kind of doing their thing.

WILSON: Minutes later, the cows make more unexpected stops in parking lots, residents front yards and up on the sidewalks near storefront windows.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: They're going to the bank and make a deposit.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: This is incredible. I'm from San Diego. We don't do this.

WILSON: It's nothing the Hillsboro police have ever done, either.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Nothing like this. Not a cattle run.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Look at the cows.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Get back, Dan. WILSON: The herd is finally corralled into the fair grounds and loaded onto a truck, the safe end to a chaotic downtown cattle drive.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: They just got away from anything. They'll get right back. That's part of cattle. That's part of life.
